Sleep Duration as a Risk Factor for Cardiovascular Diseases

V.A. Vizir, A.S. Sadomov, O.V. Demidenko

Abstract

In a review article there has been widely discussed the relationship between sleep duration and cardiovascular diseases. Lack of sleep is a common phenomenon in the developed countries, there is evidence that people in the Western countries sleep in average of 6.8 hours per day, which is 1.5 hours less than a hundred years ago. Although the effect of sleep deprivation on the human body is not fully explained, recent epidemiological studies have shown the relationship between sleep loss and hypertension, coronary heart disease and diabetes mellitus. Increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system and the changes in melatonin secretion are considered as main pathophysiological mechanisms involved in the development and progression of cardiovascular disease in patients with insufficient duration of nighttime sleep. An adequate amount of sleep may be important for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in modern society.
